Alex Kolo - ‘I’m Sorry I Love U’ | Single Review

October 1 | Written By Anna Konovalenko

Alex Kolo presenting her fans with already third single this year ‘I'm Sorry I Love U’. Co-written with Brandon Chase a love ballad of unrequited love is a third development in Kolo’s discography.

The music is a reflection of Alex’s experiences. Originally from East Windsor, NJ, at just 21, Alex Kolo had a chance to travel all over the world and study in Germany. Exploring different cultures and languages, Alex carries them through her life and pours them down into her music. Although the blend of cultural experiences might not be straightforwardly evident at first sight, they have contributed to the general layout of how Alex sees the world.

A very personal deeply resonating song was born from Alex’s own experiences which she captures in this single. She describes her struggles of saying goodbye to an unrequited love to save herself from further heartache, hoping it echoes in the hearts of her listeners. “This song is very personal to me, and I hope it resonates with anyone who has faced the pain of unrequited love."

"I'm Sorry I Love U" is a love ballad that delves into the introspection of emotions and self-dialogues that help go through sadness and acceptance of a painful breakup. The song captures all the complexity of love while still leaving room for young naivety.

The lyrics reflect the raw emotions of youth, portraying the vulnerability and helplessness that often go hand in hand with unrequited love. The opening shows the sense of intimacy that was shared between the two “I told you all my secrets/ And you shared the deepest parts of your life”. And it goes on “Now all I have are regrets/I thought we already crossed that line” presenting the reality of the connection and the reality of shattered promises.

The song unfolds into a heartfelt self-confession. In the second verse, the listener is drawn to the root of the struggle, which brings up the true feeling of a painful ending “You left me worse than you found me/ Cause without you I was never gonna fall”. The refrain “I'm sorry that I love you/ And I'm sorry I can't stay/ I'm sorry I can't be your friend/ Without throwing my heart away” means there is a deeper realisation within Alex’s heart that the right choice was to leave.

The song stays true to Alex's signature style, with familiar motifs that fans will instantly connect with. Many might notice Alex is telling a complex story with her music this year. Her last three singles showed she relives her experiences and goes through a process of self-discovery in the meantime. There’s a shadowing feeling that Alex is on the verge of something bigger, and this last song seems to be a point where she decides where she goes with her music.

Commenting on her future, Alex said “When it comes to the future, I am going to continue being vulnerable in my songwriting process and hopefully touch people with my next few singles and first album in 2025.” Therefore, there is a promise that Alex will use this opportunity to either explore new themes or dive deeper into the intricacies of love.
