Sahati - ‘2 Good 2 You’
September 17 | Written By Jessica Pispisa
There’s a quiet confidence if a song opens with a muted electro beat and welcomes the listener with the following words: ‘Sorry to keep you waiting/must be frustrating/Head high, and stand up, baby/Can tell you need saving’. It commands attention without having to make a loud, distracting entrance, and one that works just as well, like here.
‘2 Good 2 You’ is the new single by Sahati, a rising artist from Toronto whose alt-pop sounds is deftly demonstrated on this track. The song sounds directed to someone who doesn’t seem to know they have a good thing until the artist decided to remind them. “Am I a little 2 good 2 you?” is quietly repeated as mantra that she wants to make sure her ungrateful lover will remember for as long as they live. And surely, they will. The song follows her recent collaboration with CHEEYA, ‘I'm gonna kill you’, another banger of a song that serves as a warning that she is not one to me messed around with, if you want her. This current era we are in where artists are proclaiming they are not to be taken for granted by their lovers without having to bend and shape their personalities to be more “palatable” is exciting and effective (think Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo), and the music industry will be all the better for it.
Sahati recently opened for Dua Lipa -another fellow interesting and exiting pop star in her own right- at Sunny Hill Festival, which means we are about to see more of her, and hopefully so. ‘2 Good 2 You’ is a sublime tune that doesn’t feel the need to kick and scream to be heard, and that she won’t stand to be associated with anyone who is not on her level: ‘hard to believe I’m not playing’, she nonchalantly says, and boy, can we all use that reminder in the matters of the heart now and again.
Sahati also has a music video for ‘2 Good 2 You’. Directed by Nathan Lau and styled by Angie, it is an eccentric collage of stylish vignettes that include a film noir scene, a cowboy duel, and interspersed of images of Sahati making her case as to why she’s the one you want to keep your eye on. “Music to me is also poetry, visuals and films, so I am constantly trying to connect it with different mediums,” Sahati told Buzz Music in 2022, and it also explains why she’s excelling at it so far.
