Bleachers at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom | gig Review - 25/03/24
April 20 | Written by Anna Konovalenko
One, two, three.. six, seven, it would be easy to lose count of the pianos and synthesisers placed on the stage. Fast-forward from the recording studio to the stage at Glasgow’s iconic Barrowland Ballroom, Bleachers are performing an energetic and dynamic show. Opening with 'Modern Girl,' the crowd is immediately swept up in the excitement. Hits like 'Jesus Is Dead,' 'Wake Me,' and followed by 'Rollercoaster', captivate the audience throughout the night, an experience that was truly amazing.
The 2024 concert lineup featured Jack Antonoff on guitar and vocals, Evan Smith on keyboards and saxophone, Mikey Hart on guitar and keyboards, Sean Hutchinson on drums, Mike Riddleberger on drums, and Zem Audu on keyboards and saxophone. Each of the members excelled in juggling roles and instruments. Antonoff himself sings, banters, and plays keyboards and guitar while jumping and dancing all around the stage seamlessly blending with the rhythms of the song.
Also known for his work as a producer of Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, and St. Vincen, it feels Antonoff created Bleachers for his passion only; as to explore a different musical direction and channel his creative output.
The performance itself is nothing short of captivating. Opening the show, Bleachers invite Kaeto who hits the stage with indie-fusion tunes. She emerged into the art world in 2022 with her debut single ‘Good Morning’. The London-based singer not only captured everyone with her dreamlike surrealist character but also was a perfect breath of tranquillity before Bleachers.
Bleachers unique charm lies precisely in their intimacy and connection with their audience. When you enter the hallway you feel the spirit and anticipation of fans who’d in minutes be hearing their favourite music group. The way Antonoff connects with an audience is unforgettable. His energy and drive are noticeable throughout the whole show.
Bleachers don't fool their fans timelessly leaving the stage only to come back in another turn of applause. Antonoff makes it clear that they want to give all and everything to the fans before taking their final bow. That’s why the last 15 minutes of the show are spent on one breath which feels like a continuous, exhilarating crescendo.
In a grand finale, Bleachers revisit some of their most iconic hits, ensuring that every fan's favourite song has its moment. Tracks like 'Modern Girl' and 'Tiny Moves' echoed through the venue once more reigniting the fans. The crowd's enthusiastic response to these encore performances is irresistible and concluding the night with ‘Don’t Take The Money’ Bleachers take their leave.
