Atresan - ‘Singin At The Train’ | SIngle Review
August 9 | Written By Gemma West
Hailing from the vibrant music scene in Falkirk, the independent five-piece band Artesan has unveiled their fifth single, 'Singin at the Train.' With a musical palette that blends indie rock, grunge, and psychedelia, Artesan fearlessly ventures into uncharted territory, adding a captivating touch of synth experimentation to their newest release.
Whilst the band are heavily influenced by the likes of Oasis, Mogwai, and Guns n Roses in their ‘Indie Rock’ sound, the bands overall sound, especially in their new release, is also immersed in the likes of electro and folk, as they notably take inspiration from a huge range of genres to forge their unique sound. Dealing with the inevitable demise of a relationship, 'Singin at the Train' is a single that’s over 15 years in the making, with the original riff written in 2008, as the band finally gives it a new lease of life in 2023.
The mastery of this track all happens within the first 45 seconds, as the band takes us on a journey from the dystopian electronic intro into a soul-stirring folk-inspired guitar solo in an effortless build-up of tension and rhythm. The guitar work here exudes a sense of drama as it bridges the opening synth before firing into a track full of deep pulsing bass, as if narrating a tale of longing and introspection. Accompanied by an entrance of steady beating drums, the band masterfully transitions from the dystopian to passionate rock with a seamless ease, enticing the listener into a narrative which quickly builds tension and pace.
Comfortably immersed in the folk-infused atmosphere, 'Singin At The Train' s bold turn into a full-blown, eclectic rock-vibe is as definitively surprising as it is organic in transition, revealing the band's creative prowess and ability to push genre boundaries. As the drums gain intensity, the electric guitars kick in with a vibrant energy that ignites the track with an adrenaline-fueled fervour.
The lead vocalist then makes his entrance, and his voice leaves an indelible mark on the entire song's raw and outer-world energy. With a longing and punk-vocal sound, reminiscent of the powerful rock-sounding vocals that the band takes inspiration from, he infuses the track with a passionate blaze of emotion that blends harmoniously with the tone of accompanying instruments. His delivery effortlessly conveys the song's underlying themes of yearning, uncertainty, and rebellion, adding an extra layer of depth to an already multifaceted composition.
As the song progresses, the intensity amplifies in all aspects, with the drums thundering in tandem with the electrifying guitar riffs, and the vocalist pouring his heart out in each lyric. Amidst this sonic crescendo, the electro and dystopian sound continues to weave its enigmatic thread, providing a haunting backdrop that never quite releases its grip on the listener's senses. In a finale of intense crashing of drums in true rock-and-roll style, the song is brought to a powerful and final close.
The fusion of melodic guitar, rock, and electro elements throughout the track showcases Artesan's ingenious ability to craft a sound that is uniquely their own, breaking the moulds of traditional one-genre rock music and leaving an undeniable impression on anyone who listens. 'Singin at the Train' serves as a testament to the band's creativity, showcasing their ambition and innovation in crafting music that captivates and lingers in the mind. For a band with only a small collection of monthly spotify listeners - the Artesans are bursting with talent!
