Lunar Vacation - ‘Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire| Single Review
October 10 | Written By Lauren Ketterl
Indie rock band, Lunar Vacation dropped their newest album “Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire” on September 13th, and the nine-song release is a must-have for any indie music fan. The group dropped the first single for the album titled ‘Set the Stage’ in mid-July and it is the most popular song off the album so far.
The Atlanta, Georgia-based group formed in 2016 in high school after a teacher recommended lead vocalist and guitarist Gep Repasky and the other guitarist Maggie Geeslin start a band. They later recruited former member John Michael Young, who left the band in 2019, and current drummer Connor Dowd and bassist Ben Wulkan. They later acquired Matteo DeLurgio on keyboard in 2017. The band dropped their debut album in 2021 titled “Inside Every Fig Is A Dead Wasp” which was produced with help by Grouplove bassist Daniel Gleason.
This newest release gives listeners a glimpse of the group’s mesmerising sound that has drawn people like Grouplove’s Daniel Gleason to work with them. The album has a very calming sound to it and is filled with a softer indie feel. The song ‘Set the Stage’ has a Phoebe Bridgers feel to it and gives the idea of a relationship that is heading towards its end. “As a door shuts and opens, the two of us head to destruction” demonstrates this concept of a changing relationship where they are accepting the downfalls of their bond and realising they have to move on.
The song ‘Tom’ had an obsessive vibe to it with the lyrics “Can you please just look at me? Face to face we’ll never meet,” and “For now, I’ll only think the flower in your hands were meant for me.” These lines tell a story of a person who longs for someone’s attention although that person is not interested.
The final song on the album ‘You Shouldn’t Be’ talks about moving on but keeping up with an ex. “You shouldn’t be missing me, even though you said so. Didn’t expect to really see you move on so quickly,” displays an interaction between a past relationship where someone is keeping tabs on the other person. There’s a feeling of secrecy when saying “you shouldn’t be” like you know about something they’re doing from observing it.
In the end, this album perfectly reveals this group’s unique sound and tells why they are a must-hear. Listeners should be excited to see what else this talented group has to come.
