Malcolm Todd - ‘Sweet Boy pt 1’ | EP Review

March 14 | Written by Lauren Ketterl

Indie and R&B artist, Malcolm Todd dropped his new EP titled “Sweet Boy Pt1.” On February 1st, and this five-song release gives listeners a glimpse into the creative mind of Malcolm Todd.

Malcom Todd Sweet Boy

Based in Los Angeles, California, Todd dropped out of college early on to pursue music after gaining a noticeable presence on social media. He attracted listeners on TikTok by posting music clips and claiming they were new music from the artist Steve Lacy. This led fans of Steve Lacy to Todd’s music due to similar music styles between the two artists.

His newest release draws inspiration from artists such as Dominic Fike, Tyler, The Creator, and previously mentioned, Steve Lacy. “Sweet Boy Pt1.” is Malcolm Todd’s third EP release over the span of two years. This newest drop consists of five songs with ‘4Me 4Me’ being released as a single. The first song on the EP titled ‘On My Shoulder’ is about the end of a relationship and missing what you had but moving on. “And I just want you happy, forget I was madly in love with the thought of just us two ‘cause you’re not gonna call,” shows the wanting of a relationship that didn’t work out.

Up next is the song ‘Thailand,’ which has a more R&B vibe compared to the first song. This song and ‘On My Shoulder’ have similar themes of reminiscing on a previous relationship that still has feeling in it. “You’re far away, we do not speak, And I still love you, I hope you agree,” along with “Something feels wrong, I lost a friend, and you lost the time to see how I’ve been,” reflects on moving on from a relationship and how the person you’re leaving is losing you.

The third song titled ‘Ladygirl’ goes back to the indie vibe and follows a similar rhythm to Steve Lacy’s song ‘Bad Habit.’  This song talks about wanting to be in a relationship with someone. “I wanna be your throne, I wanna call you baby, I’ll give you all you want, and you can say you’d date me,” sounds like a person convincing someone to get into a relationship with them. There is also a sense of carefree trying with “And my energy, I left it on the shelf,” along with “I’ll see you soon, oh, well, maybe not,” which shows a “if it happens it happens” mentality.

The next two songs are the highlight of the release. ‘4Me 4Me’ is the fourth song and is the only single from the EP. It talks about trying to get someone to stay over at your place. “I just want you, touching my face, look at my eyes, can you not stay?” This song shows that push to convince someone to stay at your place because you want to be with them. The final song on the EP is titled ‘Rodrick Rules,’ and it is another break up song about losing someone when you won that situation. “There’s no room for us to be in love, there’s no time for you to say hello, to the one who has been waiting for you to call and say that he’s enough,” followed by “There’s no room, can you move your seat up? This rides long, but baby, now it’s done, I lost you, but maybe now I won.” This proves a winner’s mindset in a breakup situation because although you lost someone, maybe it was for the best.

Overall, this EP contains five great songs that give listeners a glimpse into the music written and produced by Malcolm Todd and should drive listeners to check out his other releases.
