Orange Dog Club - ‘Summer is Dying’ | EP Review
February 15 | Written By Lauren Ketterl
Indie garage group, Orange Dog Club released a new set of singles on December 15th, 2023, titled “Summer is Dying.” The release contains three songs including ‘That’s What I Get,’ ‘I Wanna Go Home,’ and ‘Why Don’t You Adore Me?’ The Buffalo, New York based group birthed from the mind of Tim Turner dropped their first single in August of 2022 titled ‘Feel Inside’ and continues to drop uniquely curated singles. After playing their first gig nameless, the group came up with the name Orange Dog Club after using a random band name generator while at a talent show for the University of Buffalo’s Filipino American Student Association.
Gaining inspiration from legendary garage rock bands The Strokes and Nirvana, Orange Dog Club has been able to create songs with similar angst, rasp, and rebellion as the greats. The first single of the release ‘That’s What I Get’ reflects on trying to get a girl but watching the time go by but she’s not yet yours. “He says I’m running out of time, but nothing’s gonna make her mine. Nothing’s gonna maker her, cause that’s what I get. I haven’t met you yet,” shows this process of seeing time go on but wasting your it by not jumping at what you want. It’s the feeling of being stuck as you watch everything around you move.
The next song “I Wanna Go Home” sounds like it could be an unreleased song by The Stroke. The low-tone, raspy voice of Tim Turner greatly mirrors the distinguished vocals of The Strokes lead singer Julian Casablancas in the best way possible. The song “I Wanna Go Home,” has the similar themes of time and pining for someone as the previous song. The lyrics “And I know I’m alone, and I know I’m a thousand miles away,” finished with, “My hair is turning gray, I need you. Ease my bitter bones. I just wanna go home,” shows that theme of time passing and wanting to go back to the person they love who feels like home.
The final song from this release “Why Don’t You Adore Me?” is an angsty song about wondering why someone doesn’t love you anymore. The lines “Take my hand and hold me, take my heart and show me. I just wanna know why, why baby, why” shows the singer questioning their partner of why they don’t want to be with them anymore; almost as if they are begging for answers or closure.
Ultimately, these newly released singles by Orange Dog Club give a glimpse of the garage rock music the group is capable of producing, and should leave listeners excited to hear what else this young group is able to put out.
