THEE SACRED SOULS - ‘Live For You’ | SINGLE REVIEW

September 13 | Written By Lauren Ketterl

A modern take on classic R&B mixed with soul, Thee Sacred Souls have managed to release two new singles displaying their incredible talent for reviving 70s music that will rock anyone’s soul. The singles ‘Live For You’ and ‘Lucid Girl’ were dropped together on July 31st, although ‘Lucid Girl’ originally released earlier in June. Both singles were released in anticipation for their new album “Got a Story to Tell” which comes out on October 4th.

The San Diego, California based group gained popularity in 2022 from their debut self-titled album, and the excitement waits for their newest release. The group includes members: Josh Lane (lead vocals), Sal Samano (bass), Shay Stulz (guitar), Alex Garcia (drums), Riley Dunn (piano / keys), Viane Escobar (background vocals), and Astyn Turrentine. These new singles manage to take a hint of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Al Green combine them all into one.

The band talks about drawing inspiration from classic songwriting that “made Hitsville U.S.A and the Brill Building so successful and timeless” with their new album. ‘Lucid Girl’ takes on advocacy role in supporting women, lead vocalist Josh Lane describes the song saying “This woman did what she wanted, how she wanted. She chose herself, then she grew.” This song tells the story of a woman who is pushing for change and choosing herself above all else.

The song ‘Live For You’ has a very upbeat, classic sound to it. There is a very positive message unlaying in the lyrics that talks about living for yourself and being headstrong. The song starts with the lyrics, “Get up now. Place your feet on solid ground,” showing that sense of encouragement and positivity to do things for yourself and really be one with yourself. “Learn to love yourself, the way you love the idea of love,” is another heavy lyric that demonstrates a push for self-appreciation and truly living for ones ‘self.

Overall, these new singles by Thee Sacred Souls feel like a refreshing revival of the classic R&B, soul music being put out by artist like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. The songs offer a fresh take on a classic and prove why this group is a must hear. Don’t forget to check out the full album these songs are featured on titled “Got a Story to Tell” coming out on October 4th.
