Virtues - ‘Someone For Nothing’ |Single Review
November 6 | Written By Anna Konovalenko
I cannot speak for everyone, but I find it incredibly exciting to follow and listen to the fresh local band. Observing the way they come together and forge something new is undeniably awe-inspiring and truly fills with inspiration. Today's talk will be about one of those bands – Virtues. Virtues is a young successful Aberdeen-based rock band that, apart from being quite a popular band in Aberdeenshire, is winning the hearts of their fans all over the UK.
Lead singer and guitarist Jess Mowat, lead guitarist Jack Devall, bass guitarist Ross White and drummer Ross Henderson are performing in the alternative rock genre emitting new driving tunes. The quartette undoubtedly gives a fresh perspective on alternative rock. Listening to their music is like taking a breath of fresh air. They launched one EP ‘You’re Alive’ in 2020 and another album ‘Never Better’ in 2022. Their next two singles are released this autumn. To date, Virtues says it to be the finest two tracks so far.
The single ‘Someone For Nothing’ released on October 9, 2023, is an absolute must-listen for everyone who likes dynamic dance-like songs. The instrumental intro sets the stage and serves as an enticing overture, signalling the listener that something immensely dynamic is about to happen. This energizing and motivational song forces you to rise to your feet and dance till you fall –‘A fast, punky, Virtues style slap’. Although the track has a sense of inspirational waves from The White Stripes and The Cure, it's unquestionable that Virtues' style is a unique development.
The second song ‘Snow’ will be released on November 13, 2023. When previous albums showed certain fluctuations, the single ‘Snow’ very characteristically indicates Virtues style. The melody uncovers bit by bit. Sharp driving tempos alter with more soothing rhythms. One can immediately discern the profound mastery of guitar and drum playing. Occasionally chaotic rhythms harmoniously complement the song's mood, imparting a touch of levity and carefree spirit. But what attracts the most is female vocals. It gives the songs this edge that makes them stand out. Jess’ deep low voice gradually transitions from one tonality to another, captivating the listener's complete attention.
Even though I was listening to Vitues’ albums over and over again while writing this review, I am incredibly jealous of everyone who can listen to this band for the first time and enjoy their songs.
