Vice Killer - ‘The Red Sky’ | Single Review

Rising North-East band Vice Killer have recently followed up from their debut EP ‘The Red Sky’ in 2021 with another single titled ‘Where can I find some peace?’. Vice Killer gained momentum and headlined sold-out concerts in Sunderland and Newcastle in 2022, were highlighted on BBC Introducing, and their aforementioned EP gained significant appraisal from both industry and press, including NARC Magazine.
Vice Killer have intended this latest single to continue the story being told on ‘The Red Sky’ – the moral of the story being one cannot force feed themselves happiness. More often than not, it takes a great deal of time and energy to achieve inner peace (and that’s cool).
“Where Can I Find Some Peace? is one of our favourite songs to play live” the bands frontman Thomas Gilling tells. “It creates a massive energy once the bass and the drums kick in. It would be a perfect song for a Guy Ritchie movie I think!”
It is safe to say that this Geordie four – piece have produced a sound worthy of critical acclaim. ‘Where can I find some peace?’ in its entirety sounds extremely well oiled for an alternative indie band with under 1000 monthly Spotify listeners. It follows in similar trend to many great indie tracks from the last twenty or so years; lyrically poignant, yet bright and bullish to its core – and the chorus, delightfully catchy. It keeps to the script in this respect, instantly enjoyable if you’re a fan of softer British indie/rock. It does what it says on the tin, but not in a way that feels repetitive.
“I wanted to write something a little more upbeat, and after watching a performance of 'The Stone Roses - Fools Gold TOTP (1989)' I sat down with my acoustic and the rhythm/melody came straight away. I wrote the lyrics within probably 15 minutes and the song was done. I didn't want to dwell too much on the words, and just sing what I was feeling. We jammed the song in our practice room, taking inspiration from the Madchester scene of the 90's as well as the soul of Curtis Mayfields 'Move On Up'”.
Vice Killer definitely have something unique in the works, and there is always space for bands looking to revitalise the nostalgia of the Brit Hop days. Especially bands that intend on doing it justice.
