Portugal. The Man - ‘Grim Generation’ | Single Review

On the 23rd of June 2023, Portugal. The Man, a rock band currently based in Portland, Oregon released their track titled ‘Grim Generation’ off of their new album titled Chris Black Changed My Life. Many listeners may recognise Portugal. The Man following their infectious Grammy-winning single ‘Feel It Still’ which skyrocketed off the charts back in 2017. Even so, the band actually began composing music way back in 2006, with the release of their first record entitled Waiter: "You Vultures!". Portugal. The Man was originally formed in Wasilla, Alaska back in 2004. The evocative band comprises of John Gourley (Lead Singer & Rhythm Guitarist), Zach Carothers (Bass Guitarist), Kyle O’Quin (Keyboardist & Guitarist), Jason Sechrist (Drummer), Eric Howk (Guitarist) & Zoe Manville (Singer & Percussionist). Interestingly, Gourley and fellow bandmate Manville have been long time partners. The pair welcomed the birth of their daughter in 2011.  

Portugal. The Man Band

  ‘Chris Black Changed My Life’ is Portugal. The Man’s ninth studio album, released in memory of a late close friend to the band. The album was produced by Jeff Bhasker, a Grammy award winning producer whom is a primary producer for multiple of Kanye West’s albums. Listeners may recognise that Chris Black Changed My Life is filled with inspiring lyrics, touching on multiple serious societal issues in between the exhilarating drum beats and melodious vocals. Instrumentally, the band has certainly ascended to a pinnacle, as the catchy rhythms and riffs are destined to affix itself within the heads of listeners. 

Portugal. The Man

  Without a doubt, Grim Generation’s musical elements solidifies itself as the standout track of Chris Black Changed My Life. Grim Generation kicks off with a funky yet haunting atmospheric intro, establishing a sombre tone off the get go. The band impressively synthesises their signature psychedelic rock style with elements of indie and experimental music, creating a distinct yet conventional sound which shines throughout the track.  The introspective nature of Grim Generation is precisely illustrated in its thought-provoking lyrics, tackling dystopian themes such as societal decay, struggles of modern society, and disillusionment. Portugal. The Man courageously explores the realities of modern society through the band’s poetic lyrics, rigorously capturing the sense of despair and disassociation that could saturate our mere existence.   

Portugal. The Man Grime Generation

  As the track unfolds, it gradually develops on its brooding foundation. Subsequent layers of harmonies and instrumentation are introduced, drawing listeners deep into its riveting soundscape. Grim Generation nonchalantly fuses the intertwining guitar riffs, ethereal synths, and pulsating rhythm sections to provide listeners with an alluring sonic experience that is soul-stirring and hypnotic in nature. Unquestionably, Grim Generation’s dynamic evolution certainly serves as a pivotal analogy of Portugal. The Man’s innovative yet creative musical approach. The track ebbs & flows, incorporating unanticipated musical elements and providing listeners with an ever-changing yet zestful listening experience. The track is bound to keep listeners on the edge of their seats, deeply immersed in the unfolding melodies & rhythms.  

  While listeners may perceive ‘Grim Generation’ as an eclectic piece of music crafted through the band’s artistic vision, it also resonates with the zeitgeist of its time. Portugal. The Man carefully captures the complex emotions and uncertainties faced by many in the modern society through the lyrics & mood of the track. It serves as a poignant reminder to listeners, compelling listeners to overcome the painstaking challenges that one may encounter with courage and determination. 

  Ultimately, Grim Generation by Portugal. The Man serves as a testament to the band’s musical prowess in producing music that transcends traditional boundaries and empowers listeners.
